Ahead of the UK release of her most recent film, Everybody Loves Jenifa, award-winning Nigerian actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has accomplished a historic milestone.
For the first time, a Nigerian film has achieved this feat for a UK premiere when it sold out two screens for its December 20, 2024, release.
Akindele thanked her fans, whom she lovingly refers to as “Jenifans,” on Instagram today, December 15, after sharing the wonderful news.
Her writing was: “Jenifans!!!!!!” Once again, you have surpassed yourselves. The second screen for the UK premiere of Everybody Loves Jenifa on December 20th is completely sold out, making history.
The film is already establishing new standards for Nigerian cinema internationally as it carries on the exploits of the adored heroine Jenifa.
In a social media post, the movie’s international distributor, Nile Media Entertainment, acknowledged the unprecedented accomplishment:
“History was created. Everyone is in love. The first Nigerian movie to sell out two theaters prior to its launch is Jenifa. Before the UK premiere on December 20th, you have broken two consecutive records, Jenifans. I appreciate all of your steadfast love and support.
Additionally, they urged fans to remain tuned for updates as they revealed intentions to add more territories and screens. While fans anxiously anticipate more screening information, the UK premiere of the movie is expected to increase Nigerian cinema’s international renown.
