John Fury’s prediction of the final result of the coming match between his son Tyson Fury and Oleksander Usyk indicated something: the former boxer was unsure who would win.
Lineal heavyweight kings Oleksander Usyk and Tyson Fury are warming up to face in the ring on February 17 at Saudi Arabia in a match that will enthrone the new undisputed world heavyweight champion.
John Fury said, ‘I’m going to say it first. Whoever puts the best camp in and does the work will get it and deserve it.
‘If Usyk puts a better camp in that Tyson, he works his a** off, he gets everything right, the better man will win.
‘It’s up to both guys what they want out of this. Tyson knows he needs an 180 degree turnaround. If he’s not prepared to do that, good luck to Usyk.’
This was opposite the expectations people had, since John Fury is known to usually count on his son’s size, reach, and punch power.
Tyson Fury’s WBC heavyweight title will be up for the winning, including Usyk’s WBA, WBO, and IBF heavyweight titles. Usyk the Ukrainian will be warming up to stand beside Evander Holyfield as the only people to have been undisputed cruiserweight and heavyweight champions during their times in those divisions.
John Fury went on to say, ‘You’re fighting a blown-up middleweight who got out of a swimming pool the other day and it looks like his body’s departed from him.
‘He looked like a bag of bones – no structure, no frame at all to mess with The Gypsy King a 20 stone, six foot nine powerhouse who’s got skill and heart and can do 25 rounds.
‘Usyk is a good little fighter at middleweight, light-heavyweight, maybe cruiser, but he can’t mess with them big guys.’
To challenge this final sentence of John Fury’s, some would point out that Usyk beat Derek Chisora, Tony Bellew, Anthony Joshua, and recently, Daniel Dubois — all heavyweights.
