Tragic event: A lecturer at UNIZIK passes away in a carjacking incident

Dr. Fabian Osita, a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, was purportedly shot and killed by some unidentified members of a car-snatching syndicate.

The victim was heading home from work on Monday night when the event happened close to Aroma, Awka’s High-Tension district.

Witnesses claim that the attackers ambushed Dr. Osita’s car in an effort to take it, according to Punch Online. He was immediately killed when they shot him in the head for resisting.

“Yes, he was shot dead along the High-Tension region on Monday evening,” a witness stated. It is said that he was originally from Nteje and taught at UNIZIK. His Toyota Corolla was double-crossed by the armed men, who then shot him in the head as he attempted to stop the carjacking. He passed away instantly.

In addition, the source stated that the attackers left the lecturer’s body behind and took off with his car, saying, “By the time help could arrive, he was already dead.

The growing insecurity in Awka, especially within the capital territory, is alarming, people should prioritize their lives and avoid resistance if targeted.”

The deceased was identified as a lecturer in the Business Department during a visit to UNIZIK on Tuesday, and the incident was confirmed by Ken Chukwurah, the university’s Chief Security Officer, who said that Dr. Osita was killed at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.

Chukwurah said

“Yes, he was shot at the High-Tension area in Aroma during a car-snatching incident. The attackers attempted to steal his Toyota Corolla, but when he resisted, they shot him. He was an academic staff member in the Business Department. The entire university community is in mourning, though the incident occurred outside the campus. The matter has already been reported to the Department of State Services (DSS).”

In response to the rising insecurity, Chukwurah added that members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at UNIZIK are planning to protest at the Anambra State Government House to express their concerns.

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the public relations officer for the Anambra State Police, verified the occurrence as well and said that investigations had begun to find the culprits.

Ikenga said…

“The Anambra State Police Command has launched an investigation into the murder of Mr. Fabian Osita. Preliminary reports indicate that he was shot by unidentified gunmen on December 16, 2024, at around 10:10 pm at Aroma Junction.
