Manchester City has officially announced the signing of Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt. The 25-year-old has agreed to a four-and-a-half-year contract, committing him to the club until the summer of 2029.
While the exact financial terms were not disclosed by the club, reports indicate that the deal is valued at approximately €70 million (£59.1 million), with an additional €5 million in potential add-ons. This acquisition marks City’s third signing of the January transfer window, following the arrivals of centre-backs Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis, bringing the club’s total spending this month to over £122 million.
Omar Marmoush has emerged as one of the most promising forwards in European football. Since joining Eintracht Frankfurt in 2023, he has made a significant impact, scoring 37 goals and providing 20 assists in 67 appearances. In the current season alone, Marmoush has netted 15 Bundesliga goals, making him the second-highest scorer in the league, trailing only Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane. His versatility allows him to operate across various attacking positions, including both wings and as a central striker.
On the international stage, Marmoush has been capped 35 times for the Egyptian national team. He played a pivotal role in Egypt’s journey to the final of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. His performances have drawn comparisons to fellow Egyptian Mohamed Salah, especially considering Marmoush’s impressive goal-scoring record.
Upon his unveiling, Marmoush expressed his excitement, stating, “This is a day I will never forget. To sign for Manchester City – one of the best teams in the world – is an amazing feeling.” He added, “I also want to win trophies. City have been the most successful club in England for many, many years, so I know I am joining a winning environment and winning culture.”
Director of Football Txiki Begiristain commented on the new signing, saying, “Omar is an accomplished and exciting forward, and I’m delighted he’s joining us. He has all the attributes a top-class attacker requires. He has outstanding pace and awareness, and he is exceptional in front of goal.”
Marmoush will don the No.7 shirt at Manchester City, a number previously worn by club legends such as Mike Summerbee and Raheem Sterling. He has expressed enthusiasm about linking up with teammates, particularly Erling Haaland, stating, “Erling is a goal-machine and I’m very excited to be able to play with him on the pitch and learn some things from him also.”
Notably, Marmoush becomes the first Egyptian player to join Manchester City. Reflecting on this milestone, he said, “It’s a big, big honour and I’m really, really happy to be the first player to play for Manchester City [from Egypt], showing what my country has.”
Manchester City is currently positioned fifth in the Premier League, trailing leaders Liverpool by 12 points. The addition of Marmoush is anticipated to bolster City’s attacking options as they aim to close the gap and contend for the title in the remaining half of the season.
