According to reports, Otu, a young Ghanaian man, is suing Mercy Agyei, his ex-girlfriend, on the grounds that she turned down his proposal of marriage even though he paid for her college education.
The narrative started six years ago in Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, when Otu asked Mercy to marry him and agreed to pay for her college education.
The man claimed that during their relationship, he did more than just pay Mercy’s tuition; he also launched a business for her mother and met other financial obligations.
As their affection developed, Otu moved Mercy to Tema on Mercy’s mother’s recommendation.
As Mercy moved to Tema, Otu continued to provide for her financial needs, paying for her education at Accra Technical University (ATU) for her Higher National Diploma (HND) program and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) for her degree.
Beyond Mercy’s education, Otu is said to have provided financial support for her younger brother and to have helped her mother find housing.
When Mercy made the decision to break up with him after landing a job at a bank in Ghana, the relationship took an unexpected turn.
Otu has filed a GH¢350,000 (about N26 million) complaint in the Kumasi Circuit Court, claiming he was duped into making such large investments.
According to the lawsuit, Otu gave financial support with the understanding that their relationship would end in marriage.
Court dates have been postponed until February 20, when both sides will have the chance to present their claims. The legal actions are apparently still in progress.
