While visited the eastern city of Magdeburg to pay his respects, Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed worry for about 40 individuals who were gravely injured and denounced the “horrible calamity.”

Additionally, as Germany prepares for elections in February, Scholz called for national unity amid a contentious immigration and security debate.

“That we remain united as a nation, that we remain united, that we link arms, that it is not hatred that dictates our coexistence but the fact that we are a community that seeks a common destiny,” the chancellor stated, was crucial.

“It is good to hear that we as Germans are not alone in the face of this awful calamity,” he said, adding that he was thankful for the “solidarity … from many, many countries throughout the world.”
