Online, Nigerian artist Ayra Starr is being ridiculed for shaking hands with seasoned juju performer King Sunny Ade and other dignitaries.
User @gemyoruba published the video to Twitter and chastised the woman for what he saw.
She was shown in the video introducing herself to the males who were seated near to Burna Boy’s mother.
Because of their honorary status and the Yoruba tradition, she was expected to welcome people while kneeling.
Still, the young performer stood and greeted them by shaking hands. Many online users were offended by this since they thought she wasn’t a true native of the area and was being disrespectful.
Reactions to Ayra Starr’s handshake with King Sunny Ade:
UnkleAyo said: “Pardon me for a moment. The man in suit is not who I think it is. Please tell me it’s not who I think it is. Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, @ayrastarr you stretched your hands to shake that man? Omo 2002? Egbami.” Ayurexars said: “She Dey shake KSA, that man might be older than her father.” Smoke253 said: “KSA was even more respectful than @ayrastarr in this video which to me is a shame to these GenZ children 👧👧👧.” Capolutiti responded: “Whether she knows it’s KSA sitting or not, she’s mannerless. This Africa not Obodo Oyinbo land. No need to to white wash it.”
