2023 was the worst year ever for migrants, with 8,565 individuals losing their lives on migratory routes, according to the U.N. body in charge of the problem. Further steps were demanded by the organization to guarantee “safe migration for all.”
The United Nations migration agency reported on Wednesday that at least 8,565 people lost their lives while traveling around the globe in 2018. This makes 2023 the deadliest year ever for people escaping their home nations in pursuit of better prospects.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the number of deaths among migrants that were reported in 2016 exceeded the total number of deaths and unaccounted-for deaths worldwide in 2016, a previous record year that saw 8,084 deaths.
In comparison to 2022, there were likewise 20% more deaths last year.
In order to ensure that, in ten years, people won’t have to risk their lives in search of a better life, “these horrifying numbers compiled by the Missing Migrants Project are also a reminder that we must recommit ourselves to greater action that can ensure safe migration for all,” stated Ugochi Daniels, deputy director general of IOM.
With at least 3,129 deaths and disappearances reported last year, the Mediterranean crossing continues to be the deadliest route for migrants, according to the Missing Migrants Project, an IOM effort that has been tracking migrant deaths and disappearances since 2014.
