Alibaba, a seasoned comedian from Nigeria, has disclosed that his father disowned him for ten years after he decided to pursue comedy instead of law.
Alibaba discussed quitting college to inform his father he wanted to be a comedian and how his father’s response made him run away in the Christmas edition of The Honest Bunch Podcast.
He made the decision to become a successful comic in order to disprove his father “Alibaba stated”
“My father loves to read. At 86, he earned his PhD. “Daddy, I came from school to tell you something,” I remarked to him. “All right, have you been rusticated?” he asked. “No,” I replied. I’ve made up my mind not to read the law. Comedy is what I want to do.
“What is comedy like?” he inquired. Like cracking jokes, I said. He asked my younger brother to phone my uncle, who lived nearby, and laughed. I told my uncle that I wanted to do comedy instead of reading law again when he inquired what the issue was. He emphasized that he couldn’t be a member of the family and wouldn’t read the law when he remarked, “That means I’ve found another father.” He stated everything.
I knew I couldn’t sleep in that house because my dad would beat me. So as my uncle was going out, I followed him to lock the burglary and I didn’t go back in. And my dad and I didn’t talk from 1988 – 1998. Ten years. I tried to reach out to him. I went one time to talk to him but he didn’t want to see me.
“This was the thing. So people ask, ‘Where did you get the inspiration to become a great comedian?’ I was committed. I was like I want to prove him [my Dad] wrong.”
