124 people confirmed dead in a horrific incident involving Jeju Air Flight 2216 at Muan International Airport in South Korea.
After straying off the runway, the Boeing 737, which was carrying 175 passengers and six crew members, crashed into a wall, causing a catastrophic inferno.
The event is being investigated by authorities, and preliminary indications point to a likely bird hit and landing gear malfunction as possible causes.
Only two crew members, a man and a woman, were saved and transported to the hospital in-spite of their best efforts. The plane was nearly totally wrecked, and dense smoke covered the accident site.
The corpses of the dead were placed in a makeshift morgue at the airport.
According to the National Fire Agency, 13 victims’ bodies are still unknown, while 54 men and 57 women were among the dead.
Boeing offered its support to the airline and the impacted families, while Jeju Air released a statement expressing its sincere regrets and condolences to the victims’ families.
The airline issued a statement on Thursday, which was signed by Ejike Ndiulo, head of corporate communications.
Ndiulo claims that the images circulated along with the fabricated reports are computer-generated.
