The Indian Police have detained Moses, a Nigerian living in Bengaluru, for defrauding a woman of N18 million while pretending to help her obtain a work permit for Canada.
On Christmas Eve, an investigation headed by Inspector Shaju Joseph resulted in the arrest.
A DJ named Moses, who has been in Bengaluru since 2014, is accused of using the victim’s personal information for his own gain on a private website.
Last October, when applying for a job as a medical coder, the woman inadvertently gave Moses access to her personal information, which Moses exploited to plan the scam.
The offender, disguising himself as a visa agent, contacted the victim via WhatsApp and emails, supplying a forged airplane ticket to Canada along with fake documentation of her data on an immigration website.
Gaining her confidence, he was able to persuade her to deposit Rs 17 lakhs, or 18 million Nigerian Naira, into his account.
Moses kept asking for more money, which made the woman suspicious. Eventually, she complained to the Wayanad Cyber Police Station.
The culprit was found to be in possession of Rs 6 lakhs by law enforcement officials. Moses’s arrest was made possible by tracking down his device using its IP address and keeping an eye on his online activities.
Moses has been implicated in other online scams over the years, so this is not an unusual incident for him.
Though he was a well-known DJ, reports suggest that he performed at only one DJ event each month, spending the rest of his time engaging in fraudulent operations.
Moses was taken into custody and several electronic devices were taken from him by law authorities; these gadgets are thought to have been crucial to Moses’s illegal activities.
Authorities are calling on anyone who may have fallen for Moses’ schemes to come forward as the probe is still live.
