Alejandro Garnacho wins the 2024 FIFA Puskás award, beating Paul Onuachu.

Alejandro Garnacho, a winger for Manchester United, won the 2024 FIFA Puskás Award for his incredible overhead kick against Everton.

The goal defeated Paul Onuachu’s incredible flying backheel for Trabzonspor against Konyaspor, a Nigerian striker.

The prize was given out in Doha, Qatar, at the FIFA Best Player of the Year ceremony.

The contributions of nine other contenders, including Federico Dimarco, Jaden Philogene, Mohammed Kudus, Hassan Al Haydos, and Yassine Benzia, were eclipsed by Garnacho’s outstanding performance.

When Garnacho scored in a Premier League game at Goodison Park in November 2023, it was a magical occasion.

Jordan Pickford of Everton was rendered helpless by the 20-year-old’s brilliantly timed overhead kick after he connected with a lofted cross from Diogo Dalot.

Onuachu, meantime, had won his nomination during Trabzonspor’s match against Konyaspor thanks to an incredible backheel goal.

Late in the game, with the score tied, the towering forward displayed incredible technique and timing by meeting an Enis Destan cross with a soaring backheel to give his team the victory.

Onuachu has struggled for form since returning to Southampton after his loan spell, but Garnacho is still doing well at Manchester United.

In six Premier League games, the Nigerian forward has failed to score or provide an assist.
