After the recovery, Muktar Rabiu, a suspected cable vandal who was electrocuted while stealing cables in Abuja, will be charged.
Josephine Adeh, the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, revealed this in a statement on Monday.
According to her, the vandal has been caught for a similar incident a few weeks prior, so this is actually his second time.
Adeh claims that Rabiu was first taken into custody on November 21, 2024, while on a regular patrol near Gwagwalada’s Christ the King Road.
He was found in possession of high-voltage cables that were allegedly taken from the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, she said.
She further mentioned that Rabiu was given a community service term, which included 42 cane strokes, after his arraignment in court.
But a few weeks later, Rabiu was severely electrocuted while trying to disassemble the electrical apparatus, leaving him seriously wounded.
He is currently at a hospital getting medical care.
However, Adeh stated that he would be charged after he recovered.
She cautioned lawbreakers against damaging public property.
The FCT command has issued a strong warning against theft and vandalism of public utilities and reaffirms its steadfast commitment to safeguarding vital infrastructure. In addition to endangering life, such acts also interfere with vital services that communities depend on.
Police urge the public to be on guard in the wake of these incidents and to report any suspicious activity to the closest station or via the Command’s emergency lines. In order to prevent vandalism and provide a safer environment for everyone, community involvement is essential,” she continued.
