Imo State native Fidelis Chukwu has been named Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide’s new president general.
This revelation was reportedly made in a statement following the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide Imeobi and General Assembly meeting, which took place in Enugu on Saturday.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide Secretary-General Okey Emuchay signed the statement.
According to Emuchay, Chief Simon Okeke seconded the resolution to support Nze Ozichukwu’s leadership, which was put out by Imo Council of Elders Chairman Eze Cletus Ilomuanya.
The decision comes after Ohanaeze’s leadership suffered a number of setbacks, beginning in 2022 with the passing of Professor George Obiozor.
On April 30, 2023, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu took up the position in response, citing necessity. Iwuanyanwu, however, died on July 25, 2024, and was buried on November 1.
The Imo State tenure officially expires on January 10, 2025, and Nze Ozichukwu’s term is only scheduled to last 27 days.
National Legal Advisor Joseph Ojobu and Assistant Legal Advisor Peter Aneke administered Chukwu’s oath of office as President-General. Governor Peter Mbah, speaking on behalf of the Southeast Governors’ Forum, charged the newly appointed President-General with making sure the forthcoming Ohanaeze elections are held in a transparent and credible manner.
His statement..
“In line with the doctrine of necessity that the Imo State Chapter of Ohanaeze, led by Mr C.J Ihemedu presented Nze Chukwu to the Imeobi Ohanaeze to exhaust the balance of four-year tenure allotted to Imo State”.
