As its first female pilot, Olanike Nafisat Balogun has received recognition from the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).
NCS spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada commended Balogun’s aspirations and commitment to the Service in a statement released on December 8, 2024.
In 2002, Balogun started working for the NCS and gradually improved her credentials. With the NCS’s help, she obtained an Advanced Diploma in Air Ticketing and Cabin Services, a Master’s in Public Administration from Ahmadu Bello University, and a Pilot Certification from the Flying Academy in Miami, Florida.
As the first female pilot in the NCS Airwing, Balogun is currently a Deputy Superintendent of Customs and has become an inspiration to women both inside and outside the Service.
As she reflected on her path, she recognized the difficulties she encountered, especially the choice she made to stay in public service when others went for more lucrative positions with airlines.
“It was difficult to remain in the Service, but I was committed to helping the public and realizing my dream of becoming a pilot.
She continued, “I believe my journey will inspire young Nigerians, especially women, to follow their aspirations and conquer obstacles.”
Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller General of Customs, praised Balogun’s accomplishment and pointed out that it demonstrated the Service’s dedication to developing talent and creativity.
He said, “Her tale is a testament to what can be achieved with perseverance and institutional assistance.”
The Nigeria Customs Service is commemorating Balogun’s historic achievement as a turning point for professional excellence and women representation.
