Bakeries around the country have received a strong warning from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to stop using bromate and saccharin in bread manufacture.
According to reports on Sunday, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, issued the warning at a News Agency of Nigeria Forum, stressing that bakeries found to be utilizing these dangerous compounds would be subject to harsh sanctions.
“This is where our post-marketing surveillance comes into play,” she stated. “We routinely inspect products, sometimes based on complaints received through our reform office. We have shut down several bakeries for using bromate in bread production. If bromate use is detected or even suspected, the bakery will be closed immediately.”
Adeyeye also noted that numerous water-producing factories had been closed due to substandard or unhygienic practices.
She emphasized how important NAFDAC’s Regulatory Inspection Directorate is to guaranteeing adherence to quality and safety requirements.
She clarified that “the Regulatory Inspection Directorate is crucial in ensuring that what is registered with us stays constant in the market.” Some manufacturers may change their procedures or formulae after registering. Our post-marketing monitoring makes sure that customers are protected, and standards are maintained.
