Dr. Obianma Onyia, a 52-year-old mother of three from Nigeria, has made waves online by challenging the notion that wives should ask their husbands for permission before visiting their parents.
The Nigerian doctor boldly declared that a man who demands these kinds of permits has failed in his role as head of his household.
In her address to her future sons-in-law, Dr. Onyia threatened to personally intervene and withdraw her daughters from such marriages if they were had to ask their husbands for permission to visit her.
She disregarded the common master-servant arrangements that she said were destroying Nigerian couples.
She rejected the idea that marriage should be predicated on a hierarchical structure, emphasizing that neither she nor her husband ever forced their daughters to ask for permission.
According to her
The previous post said, “I’ll personally come and take them away from you if you marry my daughters and they need to take permission from you to visit me anytime they feel fit no matter how far away they stay from me.”
I have never asked for permission, let me tell you that right now. Apparently, master-servant relationships are the norm in Nigerian marriages today, but my husband and I didn’t raise kids that way (yeah, because this whole faulty concept is new).
You reply, “But I paid bride price.”
“The bride price is not a representation of possession, but rather a commitment gesture.
“You have to be absolutely insane if you believe that your meager 10,000 (or even 100,000) can purchase a fully developed human being, whose parents spent several hundred million dollars on their upbringing… Or does it compensate for all the other losses that are unaffordable with money?
“You should strive to be teammates who resolve conflicts amicably, forge formidable bonds, and create wonderful families that last throughout time.
That ought to be your goal.
And not how to take advantage of and emotionally mistreat someone else’s helpless, priceless child.
